Observe, don’t interpret. Redirect, don’t process. Step 1: Understanding the Grey Step 2: Empathize, Don’t Internalize Step 3: Burnout Awareness & Prevention Step 4: Support, Breaks, & Ethical Help-Seeking Purpose: To support Equine Specialists in confidently navigating the “grey areas” of an Equine Assisted Learning session. Guiding Equine Specialists to stay grounded in their role, maintaining their scope of practice as related to their training and understanding, and learning how to empathize without internalizing, assisting participants in redirection without shutting them down, and reviewing self-care for ES’s before experiencing burn out. Each step includes: Teaching content, Hands-on worksheets, Practical tools, Reflection + application. Outcome: Mentees feel supported, connected, and confident navigating challenging moments in session, knowing they are not expected to hold the work alone and have clear pathways for consultation, redirection, and ethical support. Mentees will walk away from this mentorship track connected within their professional role, empowering them to support themselves and find support through mentorship. Program Takeaway: By the end of this mentorship, Equine Specialists will have a clear understanding of how to navigate and respect the grey areas of session work without getting lost in them. Participants will remain firmly within their scope of practice while still offering compassionate, grounded support, using redirection with confidence and clarity to keep sessions experiential and horse-centered. Mentees will learn to recognize early signs of burnout and respond proactively, while also gaining a clear understanding of who to lean on for support and how to seek guidance when it is needed. Empathy supports the work. Internalizing compromises it.
